Basement flooding has to be handled
very carefully as pumping out the water too quickly can cause
structural damage to the basement. When removing water from the
basement, the amount of water will be the deciding factor in which
approach to take.
If a hose connected to a washing
machine has broken or a pipe in the basement has burst but was
noticed immediately and the amount of water is minimal, water removal
can begin right away. The use of towels and a wet-vac to remove the
water along with fans and a dehumidifier to dry the area will be
enough for this situation.
If the basement has a foot or more of
water, usually caused by floodwaters from rains or a pipe that was
not noticed soon enough, careful steps are required to do the water
removal properly. It is imperative to make sure the water on the
outside of the home has receded, if the waters have not receded, do
not begin to remove water as this can cause expensive damage to the
basement. When the waters have receded and it is safe to begin
pumping the water out of the basement, a submergible pump is the best
answer. Make sure the electric is off to the home and use a generator
to power the pump. Once the pump has removed as much water as it can
the use of a wet-vac will help remove any remaining water. If you
